Havanese History

The Fascinating History of the Havanese

(The Little Dog of Cuba)

Did you know the Havanese is the only dog breed native to Cuba?

Its story stretches back hundreds of years. Settlers from Spain brought small companion dogs into Cuba in the 1500s. Over time, these dogs adapted to the warm climate and developed the silky coat and lively personality we now associate with the Havanese.

In Havana, the breed became highly sought after by the wealthy and the aristocrats. People started calling them the “Havana Silk Dog.” It wasn’t only their beautiful looks that won people over, but also their affectionate and playful personalities. Even back then, they were known as wonderful companion dogs that love being close to their people.

(A Favorite of Cuban Aristocrats)

In the 1700s and 1800s, the Havanese breed in Cuba spent their days lounging in the grand houses of the aristocracy in Havana and enjoying all the attention and luxury that came their way. The breed’s silky coat, sparkling eyes, and friendly outgoing personality just make them irresistible. No wonder everyone just fell in love with them!

Travelers visiting Cuba were no exception. In fact, some were so taken in by the charm and beauty of the breed that they decided to bring some back to Europe. And just like that, the breed was a winner in a new land!

The 1950s were a transformative period for Cuba, and during this time, many people left Cuba. Some of these people decided to take their beloved Havanese dogs with them when they moved to the United States. These few formed the foundation of the Havanese breed in America. Today, we have a thriving Havanese breed, but its history is one of dedication and love for this unique dog breed.

(A Beloved Companion Today)

Today, these happy little dogs are beloved for their affectionate nature, intelligence, and playful disposition. They are renowned for their beautiful silky coats, unique faces, and for having very amusing, entertaining personalities. In fact, some owners swear that their Havanese seem to have a built-in ability to make people laugh!

Even though it has been several hundred years since this breed was first developed in Cuba, the Havanese is still, and has always been, a beloved companion dog that enjoys being close to its people. And that is just part of why they are so very special!
